“The Way We See It” Exhibition Centers Children’s Perspectives After the Türkiye–Syria Earthquakes

The Way We See It, a new exhibition on display on the second floor of UVA’s Shannon Library through January 2027, presents photographs taken by children living in container camps after the 2023 earthquakes in southeastern Türkiye and northern Syria. Working with Save the Children, Humanitarian Collaborative co-Director Lucy Bassett led a participatory photography project that invited 23 children ages 5 to 10 to document their daily lives using disposable cameras.

The resulting images capture small moments of play, family, and daily life amid displacement, offering a rare view of crisis through the eyes of children themselves. By placing young photographers behind the camera, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on resilience, perspective, and the importance of centering children’s experiences in humanitarian response.
