HC Co-Authors Article on Children’s Perspectives in Post-Earthquake Container Camps in Türkiye

A new article published in Child & Youth Services explores how children living in container camps in Hatay, Türkiye, understand their daily lives following the February 2023 earthquakes. The study was co-authored by Lucy Bassett, co-director of the Humanitarian Collaborative, along with collaborators from Save the Children Türkiye, ChildArise, and Üsküdar University.

The article, “Children’s Perspectives on Life in Post-Earthquake Container Camps in Türkiye: Learning from a Photovoice Project,” uses a participatory research approach that invited 23 children ages 5–10 to document their daily lives using disposable cameras and discuss their photographs in follow-up interviews. The findings highlight how children’s images and narratives center family relationships, friendships, nature, play, mobility, and opportunities for agency, offering insight into how children experience displacement and recovery in post-disaster contexts.

Through work like this, the Humanitarian Collaborative continues its commitment to centering children’s voices and advancing more child-centered approaches to humanitarian research and practice.
