A Deportation Boomerang? Evidence from U.S. Removals to Latin America and the Caribbean

The Humanitarian Collaborative contributed to a newly published article in Demography. Politicians argue that an increased risk of deportation will deter subsequent irregular migration. The authors explore this argument for the case of forced removals from the United States and find that this policy has a boomerang effect. Rather than operating as a deterrent for future migrants, the forced return of migrants generated negative externalities in their countries of origin, counteracting the deterrence effect of higher deportation risk.
